Another JOGLE Blog – A Bit Special This One

You’ve probably seen a few posts on here about the history of the VZi JOGLE trip.

Finally, the guy with the plan, Brian Burrows, has started a blog to keep his log of the organisation, the planning, and the trip.

You can find his blog here…

Link to Brian Burrow's BLOGLE Blog on VZi

http://www.volkszone.com/blogle/

Its well worth a read if you want to find out more about the pain and suffering in arranging such a trip.

I would certainly keep an eye on this blog, and the moment he has it so that you can subscribe, I recommend you do.

Wheel refit….

So I collected my wheel yesterday on the way back from Southampton. I went to fit it and the heavens opened. I hope that it stop raining soon so I can get the moped back on the road.

I even thought about wheeling it into my kitchen so I could work in the dry… infact I still think that might be an idea if the weather doesn’t improve…although wheeling my soaking wet bike into the kitchen might be a bad idea.

At least it is a bank holiday weekend – there is still tomorrow to get the wheel fitted back on.

JOGLE Blog – Goulash on VZi

After moaning that I couldn’t find any moped blogs online, someone pointed out that there is already someone on VZi who did this very thing. I’ve been searching for ages and couldn’t find anything on Google but I think my work filter stops me accessing some of the info out there. However, he is the ‘highlight’ someone posted on VZi of one of them.

The plans coming together now !

We took the “west” route will look up the notes this evening and put them up. The best route is always up for debate, especially with the cyclists and endtoenders ( yes cue smutty inuendo !!! ).

We were advised to keep off the A9 as much as possible and that was the best bit of advice we got, we went over to the Kyle of Tongue and down. It was simply brilliant, sun was shining, no traffic about, fantastic scenary with the road running past the lochs. Something I will always remember. we cut through to Inverness and down to Fort William 1st night.

Day 2
more lochs A82, A76 to Dumfries, started to learn something make the throttle tension as loose as possible, wrist action wants to be as limp as Louie Spences handshake. Seriously my right wrist hadnt ached as much since I was 15 and Kate Bush was in the wank bank !!

Day 3
Long , Long Day but good. to Carlisle and A6, was a sunny Sunday so all the Bikers were out much piss taking and banter. The bikers generally stop and talk and will think you are nuts, but importantly donate !!. A6 Shap steep hill actually managed to get the slow down 30 sign to flash up Preston down to Wigan. First Breakdown, carb filter disintegrated into one of the carbs, Bike went into Backup van. We continued down to Tarporley to meet the backup van and the broken down pilot. Premier Travel inn would have loved to see most of the engine in the sink covered in Gunk !!.
Night at Tarporley.

Day 4 loaded the 3 bikes and drove back to Wigan, we all had to finish to raise the cash and you need to stick together !! A49 down to Gloucester. Watch this stretch use a Beacon, or as we did most of the way leave plenty of room as it is a fast / busy road with its fair share of idiots. Ludlow Food Centre is brilliant for Cake and A cuppa.
You can get across the old Severn Bridge into Bristol but I would check due to the number in the group, we got permission and would have blagged it but we cut across to the A38 and down the otherside.
Carried on down to Night in Taunton.
Long day as we had gone back up to Wigan plus a puncture 260 miles that day. Late in to Taunton at 9.30 pm. BUT we knew we had a short easy day in morning.

Day 5

A38 A30 down to Penzance , we were going to take the North Coast road but we had sponsorship money to collect just off the A30 so bashed on.
Only problem I had apart from losing a backlight ( luckily I managed to bodge it ) was the front wheel bearing started to squeal about 20 miles to finish. Would have carried the bike if I had to. I limped on
and we finished mid afternoon. Photos took, job done, money raised.

Anyone who gets the chance to do this I would recommend it. I guess we should have took an extra day or two and got the mileage down a little and seen a bit more and raised some additional money. But it was Brilliant / Somethings still make me laugh now thinking about it. My C50 apart from a bearing and me not fixing the light properly never missed a beat. But it didn’t average more that 23-25 mph but this didn’t really matter.

Will find route notes and put them up but if you follow the cycle route notes you wont be far wrong.

This is a ‘speed’ trip but makes some interesting reading thats for sure.

Its good to know it is at least possible.

Trying to find other JOGLE’s – Especially on mopeds.

Perhaps I’m searching incorrectly. Perhaps my Jedi Google-skills are weak. Or perhaps its not something that’s been attempted before.

I’ve been trying to find blogs of other people who have done the JOGLE trip, but mainly those who have done it on a moped. I’ve stretched it out slightly to include scooters (ie larger than 49cc engines) but I really am having difficulty finding blogs to read.

I read a blog last week of 2 people who did JOGLE by bike. Reading their journey is inspirational and the joy they had reaching the finish line really came across well on their blog.

At the weekend I read another blog of someone who did LEJOG by bike by himself. He had a helmet cam and there is some good footage which he has turned into a video to show his entire trip. This gave me the idea of getting a helmet-cam for the trip but they generally only have 1.5 hours battery life which when we will be having 6-8 hour days means either 4 cams on rotation (which isn’t cheap) or a way of charging them on the move, which would take it from a helmet cam to a bike came.

My hunt for more JOGLE blogs continues, if you have one, or have found one on-line, please leave me a comment.

Suggestion by someone on Volkszone….penalty for breakdowns/arriving last

One of the JOGLErs posted this on Volkszone

The dude i picked up my ped from had done a similar charity thing to tt this year he had a good idea for person who is last at end of day / bike breaks 6 times / drops ped etc, they had a blow up doll wich had to ride pillon with said person to be ridiculed

Probaly be me any way

Now I think the trip will be hard enough, without having to have a blow up doll on the back. Its also a bit of a logistical nightmare and to penalise someone who arrives last because they are in the final pack on the day’s ride would be a little unfair. I also hope that people do stop to help other riders if they can and I’d hate to have anyone get shafted by arriving late when helping someone else.

Besides, I’m going to need my blow-up doll for the long, lonely nights in the tent, I don’t want the hussy to be spending the day with other people!

A great page regarding getting more power from a Honda PA50 engine

Until I collect my moped I’m searching the internet to find out as much as I can about it. One of the things I’m interested in is what I can do to improve the speed/power of the scooter. It appears there are 2 engines used by Honda on the Camino, which are refered to as  the PA50I and the PA50II.

A great webpage to do with these bikes can be found here but I’ve reproduced it below.

Before you start the process of tuning your PA50I, you should consider the pros and cons. In the Honda PA50 section of the Wiki, the differences between a PA50I and a PA50II are listed. This list is longer than you think!

In summary though, here’s my own two cents. What you choose depends on your desired top speed.

Mid to upper twenties: Depends on parts prices. This speed can be reached by buying/installing a PA50II carb or re-boring a PA50I carb, PA50II reed cage, and PA50II variator ramp plate. So, if you can buy a complete PA50II engine for less than the price of a PA50II carb, reed cage, and variator ramp plate, then do it. Otherwise, buy the piece parts and upgrade your PA50I motor. (Or, if you don’t want the hassle of the parts swapping work, just buy the PA50II motor).

Mid to upper 30’s: If you want mid to upper 30’s, it will be cheaper to start out with a complete PA50II engine, and just bolt on an aftermarket exhaust. You may reach 40 if you combine this setup with a notched variator.

40’s and up: Now you’re porting/machining your PA50I 50cc cylinder, or buying a “kit” made for a honda motor, meaning you are going to buy a cylinder and exhaust. Either way, the decision whether or not you should start out with a PA50I engine or a PA50II engine boils down to the cost factor – the same as described above. If you can buy a complete PA50II engine for less than the price of a PA50II carb, reed cage, and variator ramp plate, then do it. Otherwise, buy the piece parts and upgrade your PA50I motor. The reason: the crank and block are essentially the same. The differences (motor wise) then boil down to the carb, reed, manifold, ramp plate, and rollers.

I’ve personally pursued both paths, having upgraded a PA50I and a PA50II. In my case, it was cheaper (at that particular time) to buy a PA50II carb, reed cage, and ramp plate. But – it was all a matter of timing and patience. When I was shopping for a complete motor, they were hard to come by, and expensive. I’ve seen a number of “long blocks” for sale on ebay lately (the carbs being sold separately most of the time).
