Biker Clothes

With only a month to go until we start I thought I’d better get my clothes ordered. Luckily Mum & Papa Twon had agreed to cover these as a Christmas Present. I searched the mighty Ebay and came up with these 2 suggestions.

Trousers

These have kevlar and are jeans so look like they’d be ok. Size 36″ waist is a bit scarey but I have at least 1 pair of 36″ waist combats I fit into so with losing weight I should have no issues with these. Not sure if Kevlar is as ‘forgiving’ as standard denim but I guess I’ll soon find out.

Jackets

They both have armour built in and the more expensive one has an Ipod pocket but I’m not 100% sure I’ll be listening to music on the trip…but I might get very bored so it could be a welcome distraction. On the other hand I also don’t want to die and might need my wits about me on the trek.

I told my parents I wasn’t bothered which coat I got so it could be a suprise.

All thats left now is

  1. Some waterproof trousers
  2. Some waterproof gloves
  3. Some boots

This is getting serious now!

These boots are made for walkin’….

When I was 14 my aunt took me shopping in London. It was always nice when my aunt took me shopping as I got lovely new and expensive clothes. However, when I was 14 we went shoe shopping at a place called ‘Olivers’ and it felt like the most grown-up place in the world. Being still classed as a ‘child’ all my shoes were purchased from Clarkes (probably the ‘start right’ brand) and the possibility of having some proper fashionable trainers/shoes really did make me feel like I’d be joining the ‘cool’ gang.

I got one pair of trainers. Well I call them trainers but they were actually my first pair of VANS. They looked like the trainers Jay Kay from Jameroqui wore. I’d be the Mack Daddy in the school and seeing as these cost probably 4 times as much as the trainers my mum usually got me, I felt like I could be part of the fashionable people.

Anyway…this story is taking much longer than it should.

I had bought for me another pair of shoes. Well I say Shoes but they were boots. I was desperate for some biker boots which looked very cool but the shop assistant did advise that seeing as I don’t ride a motorbike, they’d actually be very painful to walk in. I tried another pair of boots on which had metal plates on them and a big metal protector at the toes. These were lace-up so meant they bent when I pivoted my ankle so would be perfect. I loved these boots and they eventually died after 5-7 years of abuse. Not bad seeing as they were never polished or looked after.

Back to my JOGLE clothing… What I’m after is boots like this. They would look fine with jeans and would protect my feet if I come off the bike.

I guess I’ll be checking Ebay again for footware. Perhaps there is such a thing as New Old Stock (NOS) boots!

[edit]The shoe shop may have been called ‘Cromwells’ – My mind is old and my memories are fading…..

Possible Jeans/Trousers

Trouser wise I thought about getting some textile trousers that are waterproof and will cope with all the weather that the trip throws at us. If the weather is nice they might be a bit warm so I’m also on the look out for some armoured jeans. I’m sure they exists and even though we will be maxing out at maybe 25-30 mph I still think I want a sensible level of protection. Driving home from work in Hounslow last night I saw a guy on a scooter in shorts. Sure, he might be a competent rider, but you can’t account for other people’s driving so I’d never risk scootering on shorts.

“Pair of Draggin Jeans biking cargo pants in natural beige colour.  These are Kevlar lined around seat and hips and have knee armour fitted as standard.  The extra pockets on this type of trouser makes them ideal for summer touring with the benefit of Draggin’s good reputation for tough protection.

In excellent, unmarked condition, almost as new.”

These are 2nd hand but a ‘good’ style for me.

As are these.

The Technical Stuff

Kevlar® is a soft knitted non-abrasive material and is comfortable against the skin. The fabric is unique in construction and offers breathability and flexibility. The material itself is designed to dissipate heat quickly and distribute air evenly through the fibres.

Kevlar® is a man made fibre, which offers incredible protection against abrasion, cuts and heat. Five times stronger than steel pound for pound, flame resistant up to 400 degrees Celsius and exceptionally cut and slash resistant.

Kevlar® in various forms is used in ropes that tie up ships, clothing worn by saw-millers, fire-fighters, glass handlers and air force pilots, tank armour, aeroplane wings and lightweight canoes.

Probably the best known is the production of bullet proof vests! Although constructed in a different way (lets face it who wants to wear a bullet proof vest on their arse!)

The knitted Kevlar fabric cannot be easily ripped, torn or damaged in any way apart from manually cutting with scissors and the like.”

A Cool Looking Jacket

Someone on VZi mentioned that they do Parka jackets with protection in them. I guess designed for the ‘Mod’ scooter generation they don’t look too bad and look like they come in Twon size.

Parka Jacket on Ebay

The text of ebay advises…

Armadillo Parka Jacket

The Armadillo clothing range features classic styling with up to date 21st century materials.

The Parka jacket combines urban styling with clean lines and classic comfortable fit, the perfect weekday to weekend crossover jacket. It is also 100% waterproof and breathable with a fleece lining.

  • Removable d30 impact protection elbow and shoulder
  • Underarm vents
  • MP3 Pocket with Headphone loops
  • Waterproof outer comms pocket
  • Ergonomic adjustable hood
  • 2 Year Guarantee

So it has elbow and shouulder protection, which is good, and it also has vents to keep you cool. The ‘waterproof outer comms pocket’ just sound like somewhere to keep your iphone but then it also has a MP3 Pocket with Headphone loops, which although sounds useful, I’m not sure I want to be listening to music while I’m riding along.

Pic of the jacket, although I’m not sure the guy modelling it looks too happy!
