My Group for JOGLE

Ok, so I’m not overly happy with the name but I do think that this will be a case of ‘slow and steady gets the breakfast ready’!

Slow shit.

Getting the Tyre Changed

After removing the rear wheel (see previous blog for Video) I tried to work out how to change the tyre/innertube. Not being the most mechanically minded I couldn’t see how to get the tyre of the wheel.

At this point I thought it would be best to have a professional do it rather than risk me buggering up my wheel and needing me to get the wheel replaced.

In a village local to me there is a motorbike shop so I decided to go there to see if they had any innertubes in stock. On the drive there I remembered that they are actually a Honda Motorcycle dealers and so should have the exact part I need.

I go inside and see if they can help. The guy checks the smallest of stock cupboards and although they don’t have the tube in stock, he can order it in and it will be there Wednesday.

The cost? £8.

Someone on VZi ordered 2 innertubes from eBay and paid £16 delivered so I don’t think that is a bad price.

After leaving my details I asked how easy it was to actually change the innertube. A reply came from the bloke the other side of the shop, “It takes me no time what-so-ever”. I felt this was the chance for me to push my luck…”Do you think you could do mine for me”, “Sure, no problem” came his reply.

So I left the wheel with them and they will call me when it is done. I feel like I have achieved something today. Maybe its not as great as having my bike back on the road but I’m halfway there and I did what I considered the hard bit (Actually getting the rear wheel off) all by myself.

Non-Jogle Blog – Wrong Way Down

Another Day – Another Blog.

Wrong Way Down Blog

There are a couple of items of note on this blog. The first being that this is the first NOT about JOGLE or LEJOG. Secondly its the first blog I’ve read which has had a high number of breakdowns. I think with a group our size we will see a number of breakdowns everyday. The odds are stacked against us for it to happen so I think we should at least prepare ourselves as much as possible. Finally, they are doing their trip on a HONDA CAMINO, its just a shame this isn’t a JOGLE or LEJOG trip.

JOGLE Blog – Goulash on VZi

After moaning that I couldn’t find any moped blogs online, someone pointed out that there is already someone on VZi who did this very thing. I’ve been searching for ages and couldn’t find anything on Google but I think my work filter stops me accessing some of the info out there. However, he is the ‘highlight’ someone posted on VZi of one of them.

The plans coming together now !

We took the “west” route will look up the notes this evening and put them up. The best route is always up for debate, especially with the cyclists and endtoenders ( yes cue smutty inuendo !!! ).

We were advised to keep off the A9 as much as possible and that was the best bit of advice we got, we went over to the Kyle of Tongue and down. It was simply brilliant, sun was shining, no traffic about, fantastic scenary with the road running past the lochs. Something I will always remember. we cut through to Inverness and down to Fort William 1st night.

Day 2
more lochs A82, A76 to Dumfries, started to learn something make the throttle tension as loose as possible, wrist action wants to be as limp as Louie Spences handshake. Seriously my right wrist hadnt ached as much since I was 15 and Kate Bush was in the wank bank !!

Day 3
Long , Long Day but good. to Carlisle and A6, was a sunny Sunday so all the Bikers were out much piss taking and banter. The bikers generally stop and talk and will think you are nuts, but importantly donate !!. A6 Shap steep hill actually managed to get the slow down 30 sign to flash up Preston down to Wigan. First Breakdown, carb filter disintegrated into one of the carbs, Bike went into Backup van. We continued down to Tarporley to meet the backup van and the broken down pilot. Premier Travel inn would have loved to see most of the engine in the sink covered in Gunk !!.
Night at Tarporley.

Day 4 loaded the 3 bikes and drove back to Wigan, we all had to finish to raise the cash and you need to stick together !! A49 down to Gloucester. Watch this stretch use a Beacon, or as we did most of the way leave plenty of room as it is a fast / busy road with its fair share of idiots. Ludlow Food Centre is brilliant for Cake and A cuppa.
You can get across the old Severn Bridge into Bristol but I would check due to the number in the group, we got permission and would have blagged it but we cut across to the A38 and down the otherside.
Carried on down to Night in Taunton.
Long day as we had gone back up to Wigan plus a puncture 260 miles that day. Late in to Taunton at 9.30 pm. BUT we knew we had a short easy day in morning.

Day 5

A38 A30 down to Penzance , we were going to take the North Coast road but we had sponsorship money to collect just off the A30 so bashed on.
Only problem I had apart from losing a backlight ( luckily I managed to bodge it ) was the front wheel bearing started to squeal about 20 miles to finish. Would have carried the bike if I had to. I limped on
and we finished mid afternoon. Photos took, job done, money raised.

Anyone who gets the chance to do this I would recommend it. I guess we should have took an extra day or two and got the mileage down a little and seen a bit more and raised some additional money. But it was Brilliant / Somethings still make me laugh now thinking about it. My C50 apart from a bearing and me not fixing the light properly never missed a beat. But it didn’t average more that 23-25 mph but this didn’t really matter.

Will find route notes and put them up but if you follow the cycle route notes you wont be far wrong.

This is a ‘speed’ trip but makes some interesting reading thats for sure.

Its good to know it is at least possible.

Post #100 on my blog…And a video to celebrate!

This is the 100th post on my blog and I thought I’d celebrate it with a REAL video of my ACTUAL jogle bike.

The weather today has been shocking. Occasionally we might be bathed in glorious sunshine and then 30 seconds later we’d have a massive down pour. I think part of this is because of the pub crawl I went on yesterday. After not drinking for 5 odd years I managed a very respectable 14 pubs and even a can of 4% Stella when I got back to my house. I have paid for it all of today and have had a dreadful hangover all day. The hang-over stopped me from going to try to get a helmet (see the post #99 for more info).

Inbetween the rain I started the bike up. It was working and even though it hadn’t been run for a week, it started no problems. I thought I’d video it so that I had proof that it did run – I don’t have a great track record with vehicles lasting very long in my ownership but I need this moped to last until at least the end of the trip.

I do need to get a helmet so  I can start taking my moped out. Although it hasn’t been a great weather day, today felt like a day where I should have been out and about on my moped.

I will be soon, and I’ll have to get used to riding in the rain, I’m pretty sure that Scotchland will have enough rain to wash away a large army.

I really need to buy a helmet….

…but an evening of heavy drinking has meant I’m not really wanting to leave the house. I’ve also got no money so I really do need to wait until payday which should be next friday.

I think there is a shop nearby which sells them. Tri-Counties Motorcycles should sell helmets but I’ll check with my friend Dave the Cat (Who owns a very nice lookin KTM bike – Its white, thats about all I can tell you). Once I have the helmet I will get the bike insured and will start my practice riding.

The heavens opened up today so the bikes got a bit wet. I was going to try starting it up as I’ve not done that for a week – I’ll give it a go in a bit.

The first ‘Test ride’

I put my handlebars back on properly (we’d only loosened 2 nuts to allow them to ‘lean back’) and  started the engine.

This involves flipping a switch which converts the bike from cycle mode to motorcycle mode. I know what you are thinking…this is essentially the ‘Super Pursuit’ version that my moped has. Next up you have to pedal to start the engine, which is nice.

With the engine running I hesitantly blipped the throttle.

It rev’d.

I blipped it again.

Rev.

Blip

Rev.

I now need to get the bike off the stand. I did this and gentle pulled back on the throttle. The bike slowly went forward. I lifted my feet and now I was scootering. I went up and down my private test track trying to build up speed. I kept on with this but i didn’t have a helmet. An Astra reversed up my private test track so I jumped off the bike and walked it back to my house.

A good first run and I have at least now ridden a bike. I can call myself a biker!

Honda Camino Dimensions

Due to the cool colour my moped has I’m thinking about whether it will fit in the back of my ‘fun’ car as a bit of a run-about when I go to shows and the like. Luckily someone has Honda PA50 Service for the 1983 Honda Camino (my model) so I’m able to check the dimensions

  • Overall Height – 1050mm
  • Overall Length – 1650mm
  • Overall Width – 640mm

So it is just over a metre high and 1.65m long. This *might* fit behind the back seats of the wizard but I’m not sure. I’m guessing that both height and length will be a problem. When I get the bike I should be able to see how ‘collapsible’ it may just be a case of removing the front wheel or moving the handlebars.
