What is a moped?

Another thing I hadn’t considered is that the DVLA actually outline what they consider a moped to be. I was just planning on getting a 50cc or smaller engine bike but it turns out that they have an official description of what a moped is.

“What is a moped?

A moped is a motorcycle that has the following features:

•             maximum design speed not exceeding 50 kilometres per hour (km/h) (about 31 miles per hour (mph)

•             an engine capacity no greater than 50 cc

•             it can be moved by pedals, if the moped was first used before 1 September 1977”

So I do need to be careful of the maximum speed. I’m not sure if a 50cc scooter would be able to reach 50km a hour based on my ample ‘girth’. I doubt I’ll be worried about the pedal situation.

And I can relax – The rules on what I can legally ride….

I was quite worried about what I could ride on my car licence. The additional cost of a CBT was something I thought I could do without. Luckily I passed my test in 1999 and the rules changed in 2001.

The direct link to what it means can be found on the DVLA WEBSITE but I’ll cut and paste the info here.

“If you obtained your full car licence before 1 February 2001 you are automatically entitled to ride a moped without L-plates (D-plates in Wales).

If you obtained a full car licence after 1 February 2001 you must first complete a CBT course and obtain a DL 196 certificate to validate your entitlement.”

So I can get a moped and not worry about L Plates or the CBT.

The Rules

1) It needs to be 50cc or less.

2) It needs to be road legal.

3) You need to be able to legally drive it.

And I think thats about it!
