iPhone Battery Case – Update

After charging the case fully yesterday and unplugging it and putting a fully charged iPhone 4s into it at 3pm…. the phone is now showing 99% and no longer being charged.

Nearly 21 hours of a fully charged phone.

I’ve listened to about 4 hours of music.

I’ve had 3G and Wireless on all that time.

I’ve surfed the web, read my emails, updated blogs.

I’ve also watched perhaps 2 hours of iPlayer.

Hopefully my phone will happily eat up the 1080p video recording, the iMovie video editing  and 3G youtube video uploading with no issues. It might not be quick but it should work – I do also hope we have some free Wi-Fi we can steal so I can get good quality video uploaded. I get about 750mb from Voda which will easily get eaten up with a couple of videos.

🙂

Nearly there!

Help with Blogging – New Purchase!

I love buying ‘stuff’!

I’m planning on blogging on the trip via my iPhone4s. I’ve got wordpress installed as an App but I’m worried that the video/photos/uploading will really be a drain on the battery. Its not exactly the most generous of batteries anyway so if I’m filming 1080p video and then trying to upload to youtube/wordpress, well I think that’s asking a bit too much from my mighty iPhone!

I wanted to get a battery pack for the phone. People have very kindly said I can use their campers to charge it up of an evening but I am worried about filming/blogging on the trip. Not only do I want to make sure I can record everything, I want to be able to make and receive calls if needed.

I found this on amazon

and it looks just like I want it to. I don’t think the case looks too bad and as I have Amazon Prime it should be delivered tomorrow.

I’ll take some photos and let people know how I get on with it. It has some good reviews and it is also ‘fulfilled by amazon’ so I have a bit more faith in the product than some of the £8 ‘batteries’ which are on Amazon but have reviews like ‘melts!’ and stuff like that.

Will keep you guys informed.

1 Month and Counting

And I’m shitting bricks.

I’ve still got loads to organise and I hope to start getting these ticked off. Once the clothes arrive I will do a few journeys round town. I know I’ll look stupid but I could do with the practice.

I think I might get some mirrors too as they are only £20 (ish) off ebay and could help my safety.

Finally, I need to fix my pedal start. I’ll be moving the bike into the kitchen to work on this while we have this crappy weather. It can still be bump-started but I think I’ll soon get bored of doing that.

If the clothes arrive soon I might have some more photos for you to enjoy. Lucky you guys!

Jogle Blog – Richards JOGLE

I found this one of a guy solo cycling the route.

http://richardsjogle.blogspot.com/

Its a good story and tells quite a bit of the troubles a lot of bikers had. He has some good advice on the mapping but I think our group of moped-ers will be led by Tom Tom. Or at least I hope we are.

He does mention that he had little problem with phone signal so was able to blog via his phone which is useful to know.

Trying to find other JOGLE’s – Especially on mopeds.

Perhaps I’m searching incorrectly. Perhaps my Jedi Google-skills are weak. Or perhaps its not something that’s been attempted before.

I’ve been trying to find blogs of other people who have done the JOGLE trip, but mainly those who have done it on a moped. I’ve stretched it out slightly to include scooters (ie larger than 49cc engines) but I really am having difficulty finding blogs to read.

I read a blog last week of 2 people who did JOGLE by bike. Reading their journey is inspirational and the joy they had reaching the finish line really came across well on their blog.

At the weekend I read another blog of someone who did LEJOG by bike by himself. He had a helmet cam and there is some good footage which he has turned into a video to show his entire trip. This gave me the idea of getting a helmet-cam for the trip but they generally only have 1.5 hours battery life which when we will be having 6-8 hour days means either 4 cams on rotation (which isn’t cheap) or a way of charging them on the move, which would take it from a helmet cam to a bike came.

My hunt for more JOGLE blogs continues, if you have one, or have found one on-line, please leave me a comment.

Blogging the Trip – Storage

The final of my 3 issues is storage – where will I keep all the pictures/video I record on the trip.

A quick search on-line shows that I would get about 3 hours of HD recording on my 16GB iPhone4. That’s not too bad at all but I’m sure that wont be enough and it also is only 3 hours if there are no photos, no music and little apps on the phone. My contract is up in December so there is a chance I could have the new iPhone5 (which is rumoured to coming out later this year) that will hopefully have some additional storage but I still doubt that it will have a micro SD slot to allow me to use multiple cards which I can just swap-out when full.

To help me prepare for this I have to use my current iPhone44 as the device I’m using. With no expandable memory I have to make do with just the 16GB of storage (minus all the other stuff stored on my phone).

The only thing I can do is try to download from my iPhone4 onto a laptop/computer at the end of every day. Now this is something which will cause me issues. Even if I do take a laptop I still need to charge the laptop. I used to have a little Acer Aspire One which had a 9 cell battery giving 6-8 hours off 1 battery, however I don’t have it anymore and it did run Linux which didn’t have an iTunes account on it. If I can get one of these, and install windows on it, then I might have a way of downloading from my iPhone4 on a nightly basis. The Acer Aspire One, although not the most hard-hitting power-wise of laptops has a small screen (less battery power required), a slow processor (less battery power required) and most importantly has a really small form factor so it wont take up much space or weigh much – This is a bonus if I need to carry it with me while on my bike.

As I want to take plenty of video and pictures I think it is really important to get a laptop for the trip. My sister had an AAO which she dropped and now I can get the HD recognised. I wonder if I can get it fixed for a reasonable fee? It would be a great thing to have for the trip, and with perhaps a couple of spare batteries I could make the entire trip. I know I wouldn’t be able to edit any video with the AAO but I could download it from the iPhone44 using iTunes no problems.

I do have a cigar lighter to 3 pin plug adapter so if I have a large enough lock box/saddle box then I’ll be able to charge the laptop/phone on the move!

The more I think about it, the more I need to get a bike sooner to not only practice riding but also get it set up to be my mobile blogging station!

….I wonder if they do external mobile phone signal boosters?

Blogging the Trip – Mobile Phone Signal

I must say that this is my biggest worry on the whole trip. The problem is that is the 1 things I can have no control over and nothing I do during the trip can improve the signal that I get.

As we are riding through Scotland I think we’ll have the same problem that we’ll have once we get to Land’s End – no mobile signal. I have been to Land’s End before and it really was poor for Vodafone signal strength. A dodgy signal (where you go in and out of range) also has a negative effect on your battery life as it take more power finding a signal when its lost.

As there isn’t much I can do about it I’m going to try not to worry about it. I believe that my iPhone will store the text updates/photos/video and I should be able to upload them when I get back into signal. I think the plan for riding is a short stop every couple of hours. This should hopefully give enough time to at least get my blog updates uploaded and maybe even a cheeky photo or 2.

Blogging the Trip – Battery Life

As luck would have it I carry around an HD Camcorder with me at all times. I also (generally) have a constant link to the internet to keep my connected to the web 24/7. I do this via the medium of a wonderful little device called ‘The iPhone 4’.

As all real iPhone4 owners (and owners of other such marques) will tell you, the battery life is pretty shocking. Touch Screen phones usually suffer badly from poor battery life and the iPhone4 is no exception. Factor in to this I will want to be recording my thoughts on the trip not only in text but also in photo & video.

Uploading text from the iPhone4 isn’t too bad but getting photos & videos uploaded will really drain the battery.

As usual the good people of Volkszone answered my query about what to do about charging the phone up on the move. They suggested a cigar lighter kit from ebay.

Its simple enough and connects via 2 wires so even someone like me could fit one… I’d just need to be able to connect it to the iPhone charger without either breaking it or getting my iPhone wet/dirty.

This solves 1 of the 3 big problems.

There are 2 easy solutions

  • Cigar Lighter fitted to Scooter
  •  Hook up to one of the Gennies overnight.

Blogging the trip

One of the other things important to me is being able to blog while we are on the journey. Sure, its easy doing my update when sat in front of a computer but if I want to upload my photos and videos from the trip, how will I do this?

I plan to use my iPhone4 as this fits in my pocket, it easy to use and is well connected to allow me to upload/download/view/edit on the move.

There are 3 problems as I see it.

  1. Battery Life
  2. Mobile Phone Signal
  3. Storage

Each of these will get their own blog posts as they are pretty big!
