Boots bought

Arrived in Northampton and a quick trip to Hein Gerick to get some boots. They were a bit more expensive than the Lidl ones but much more comfortable!

Maybe pictures later.

Northampton twinned with Poiter – it’s a sign of good things.

Turns out I am a helmet holder….

What a plum I am.

It’s a 4% oil mix on the moped.

That was a lucky escape!

Glad I checked and my Honda Camino brother on VZi told me the correct amount of oil!

Biker Clothes

With only a month to go until we start I thought I’d better get my clothes ordered. Luckily Mum & Papa Twon had agreed to cover these as a Christmas Present. I searched the mighty Ebay and came up with these 2 suggestions.

Trousers

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/14oz-Denim-DuPont-320GSM-Kevlar-Biker-Motorcycle-Motorbike-Pants-Trousers-Jeans-/110774765583?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Clothing&var=&hash=item5f7889f5e0

These have kevlar and are jeans so look like they’d be ok. Size 36″ waist is a bit scarey but I have at least 1 pair of 36″ waist combats I fit into so with losing weight I should have no issues with these. Not sure if Kevlar is as ‘forgiving’ as standard denim but I guess I’ll soon find out.

Jackets

They both have armour built in and the more expensive one has an Ipod pocket but I’m not 100% sure I’ll be listening to music on the trip…but I might get very bored so it could be a welcome distraction. On the other hand I also don’t want to die and might need my wits about me on the trek.

I told my parents I wasn’t bothered which coat I got so it could be a suprise.

All thats left now is

  1. Some waterproof trousers
  2. Some waterproof gloves
  3. Some boots

This is getting serious now!

My Helmet is So Shiney

Just a quick update on my helmet as I realised I’d not uploaded a picture.

Its not quite a ‘Stig’ helmet, but it was nice enough and was discounted at Hein Gericke to £59.99.

I know nothing about helmet brands but this is a Takai helmet. I could have got it in just black but they would have had to order it in and I wanted to walk out then and there so I got the black & white helmet.

My Big Helmet

I had this weekend all planned out.  Between 12-2pm I was to be attending a little VW meet at The Old Leathern Bottel in Wokingham. My sister wanted some help building furniture and I wanted to buy a helmet so I could finally take my moped out on the open road.

The subjects of helmets is a very personal matter. Fnarr Fnarr. I wanted to save some cash and buy on-line but my fellow JOGLErs said I needed to try on some helmets to see what would fit. This meant going to a Motorcycle Clothing Shop. Living the dream!

I had heard of a place called Hein Gericke and searched them on-line and they had helmets in my price range. They also had a shop in Reading, only 15 miles from my house. So I jumped in my car and was there in 30 minutes.

I’d already checked on-line and they had a sale on. I knew that my budget (£50-80) would include some £100+ helmet which had been reduced. I only wanted to get a helmet as I’m sure I’ll be able to get the rest of the clothing required on-line based on their sizing guides. There were 2 people on the desk when I went in and I started with, “Hi, I want to buy a helmet.” and a very helpful chap guided me to the massive helmet (fnarr fnarr) selection.

“Have you got a preference in make/model?”

“I’ve got a preference in price” was my amazingly witty reply. Well I thought it was.

With this in mind he took a helmet from the display and I tried it on.

“This is £49.99” and it fitted really well. The only problem was that I couldn’t get my glasses on. I explained that I needed to wear my glasses while riding and the sales guy fetched me another helmet. This one had a groove either side of the padding inside to allow the glasses to be worn with the helmet on. The 2nd helmet seemed to fit well but I asked the guy if he had any more in my price bracket. He gave me another £49.99 helmet which I could feel pressing on my forehead.

The sales dude explained that a little pressure on the cheeks is good, but on the forehead its bad. So I went for the 2nd helmet I tried on and it was only £59.99, within my price bracket.

As I went to pay I asked if there was anything else I needed, he recommended some visor cleaner in a spray, which I bought, then asked what security I had. He was a bit shocked to hear I had none, but then I don’t live in Reading and my bike hasn’t moved from my back garden!

Sales Dude took me to the security section and first of all suggested I buy a disc-lock which I had to explain wouldn’t work on my mighty Honda Camino as it had drum brakes. I settled on something which looked a bit like a bike lock so it was light-weight and easy to fit.

My total spend at Hein Gericke was £83.96 and I feel like I’m ready to hit the road as a biker. I thought the helmet would come in a box but instead I got a little fabric bag for it to go in. And now it will live in my cupboard behind my kitchen ready for its first outing.

The Sales Dude did tell me something of use. I said I shouldn’t drop it and he said although that used to be true of old helmets, new ones can take the odd drop/knock but I needed to pay attention to the black inside of the helmet. If it looks cracked or white lines appear in it then it needs to be replaced. This was good to know.

I really need to buy a helmet….

…but an evening of heavy drinking has meant I’m not really wanting to leave the house. I’ve also got no money so I really do need to wait until payday which should be next friday.

I think there is a shop nearby which sells them. Tri-Counties Motorcycles should sell helmets but I’ll check with my friend Dave the Cat (Who owns a very nice lookin KTM bike – Its white, thats about all I can tell you). Once I have the helmet I will get the bike insured and will start my practice riding.

The heavens opened up today so the bikes got a bit wet. I was going to try starting it up as I’ve not done that for a week – I’ll give it a go in a bit.

I need to buy a helmet…

I’m going to go looking for one this weekend.

My bike is parked out the back of my house and I’m looking forward for taking it out for real. It stand there, all proud, teasing me to take her out.

“Go on…just a quick ride, no-one would ever know.”

But the evil temptress must wait…at least until I have a helmet. Its been a shame as it would have been good to go for a ride for the last couple of days in the sunshine. Today it is pissing down with rain so I’m not missing much but the rumours are that it is going to be a nice weekend…. I hope the sunshine stays out.

Motorcycle Clothing …… Shop Sketch

Some of you may know that I work quite a distance from where I live. To fend off the boredom that long motorway commutes create I listen to a lot of podcasts. These download from Itunes directly to my iPhone and I connect my iPhone to my car stereo with a lovely USB wire (or Bluetooth – cos I’m fancy like that).

The beauty of podcasts is that they download automatically and you can re-visit them whenever you want. The main thing for me is that the ones I generally listen to are about an hour each, which matches my each-way commute. 1 journey = 1 podcast. It does have the downside that most  podcasts are released weekly so I need about 10 weekly podcasts to cover my journeys to work. In real life this works very badly as currently I’m subscribed to 3 podcasts, none of which are currently being made.

  • The Adam & Joe 6 Music Podcast
  • As It Occurs to Me Podcast
  • Adam’s Big Mix Tape Podcast

This does mean I listen to the same podcasts over and over again. I’m a creature of habit and repetition so I don’t mind listening to the same actual show every few weeks. And I do, but currently it is every couple of days…. I cleared my iPhone4 a month or so ago to make sure I had plenty of recording space for video footage so I have only 1 series of each (Although there was only 1 series of Adam’s Big Mix Tape). I really should fix this.

Back to the story….

This morning on my drive to work I was treated to the Motorcycle Clothing Shop Sketch from AIOTM. You can find a copy of it on the script that Richard Herring Has uploaded to his website -> HERE <-   Look for script 3.6 for the Canadian interpretation of the sketch.

I suddenly thought I will actually need to go into a Motorcycle Clothing Shop myself, although for me I will actually own a motorbike, well a moped. And that’s close enough. I think I’ll need to try a few helmets on to see what fits. I wonder if I could re-create the sketch when I go in and see whether people know what I’m talking about.

What is very funny is that Emma Kennedy goes into a Motorcycle Clothing Shop in real life and they refuse to serve her because of the sketch.

Anyway, All this talk about AIOTM reminds me, I’ve still got a cumpkin to finish off……

These boots are made for walkin’….

When I was 14 my aunt took me shopping in London. It was always nice when my aunt took me shopping as I got lovely new and expensive clothes. However, when I was 14 we went shoe shopping at a place called ‘Olivers’ and it felt like the most grown-up place in the world. Being still classed as a ‘child’ all my shoes were purchased from Clarkes (probably the ‘start right’ brand) and the possibility of having some proper fashionable trainers/shoes really did make me feel like I’d be joining the ‘cool’ gang.

I got one pair of trainers. Well I call them trainers but they were actually my first pair of VANS. They looked like the trainers Jay Kay from Jameroqui wore. I’d be the Mack Daddy in the school and seeing as these cost probably 4 times as much as the trainers my mum usually got me, I felt like I could be part of the fashionable people.

Anyway…this story is taking much longer than it should.

I had bought for me another pair of shoes. Well I say Shoes but they were boots. I was desperate for some biker boots which looked very cool but the shop assistant did advise that seeing as I don’t ride a motorbike, they’d actually be very painful to walk in. I tried another pair of boots on which had metal plates on them and a big metal protector at the toes. These were lace-up so meant they bent when I pivoted my ankle so would be perfect. I loved these boots and they eventually died after 5-7 years of abuse. Not bad seeing as they were never polished or looked after.

Back to my JOGLE clothing… What I’m after is boots like this. They would look fine with jeans and would protect my feet if I come off the bike.

I guess I’ll be checking Ebay again for footware. Perhaps there is such a thing as New Old Stock (NOS) boots!

[edit]The shoe shop may have been called ‘Cromwells’ – My mind is old and my memories are fading…..
