My Amazon Wish List

I’ve set up an Amazon Wish-List for the people who read this blog.

It contains items I’ll find useful for the trip and as I find more items I will add them to the list.

Don’t feel you have to buy anything for me, but if you fancy getting something, that would be great.

More Importantly!

LEJOG Blog – Super Tramp

Another Day, Another hunt of a moped blog.

http://supertramping.wordpress.com/category/lands-end-to-john-ogroats-1987/

Although its not a JOGLE blog I’m interested as the writer explains he was doing it on a moped. He seems to have done a very relax trip with no planning, just a tent, sleeping-bag and him.

What is strange is that he mentions going on the M74, which being a motorway is usually off limits to mopeds. This might mean that he is using moped but means scooter, but I’m hoping it means that he just didn’t care and went on the motorway regardless.

He does spend a bit of time on Motorways but as you’ll tell from the blog, this is the 80’s and perhaps things weren’t enforced as much. The blogger also makes the journey back down, including high-lights of running out of petrol loads and doing a poo in his tent.

In fact, his final day of riding has all the excitement and ups/downs of a Dave Gorman book. I wont ruin the ending but I will recommend you have a read of his blog – it wont take long. Plus, his son has a VW van. He does mention this encounter with a Hell’s Angel in the Epilogue which shows exactly the kind of ‘spirit of the road’ that I hope we encounter on our trip.

Some fellow travellers and waysiders, whom I did exchange a few words with on the way and those who helped me, not alone made such a pilgrimage memorable, they truly restore one’s faith in the fellowship of mankind, they understood. One such person for example, was the ‘Hells Angels’ biker who saw me pushing the bike because I had run out of fuel. He slowed down and whizzed pass me, only to return with a full can of petrol. Having thanked him for his kind gesture, I asked him how much I owed him – ‘pass it on’ he said. That is something I will never forget.

I will add 1 final quote taken directly off the blog – It really does change how the whole blog comes across.

(Post Script – this trip proved the be the maiden voyage of eight such trips that continued until Dermot was 86 years old. He celebrated in 89th birthday hitch-hiking across Canada from Toronto to Edmonton, with only his trusty tent and rucksack as his companions.)

Trying to find other JOGLE’s – Especially on mopeds.

Perhaps I’m searching incorrectly. Perhaps my Jedi Google-skills are weak. Or perhaps its not something that’s been attempted before.

I’ve been trying to find blogs of other people who have done the JOGLE trip, but mainly those who have done it on a moped. I’ve stretched it out slightly to include scooters (ie larger than 49cc engines) but I really am having difficulty finding blogs to read.

I read a blog last week of 2 people who did JOGLE by bike. Reading their journey is inspirational and the joy they had reaching the finish line really came across well on their blog.

At the weekend I read another blog of someone who did LEJOG by bike by himself. He had a helmet cam and there is some good footage which he has turned into a video to show his entire trip. This gave me the idea of getting a helmet-cam for the trip but they generally only have 1.5 hours battery life which when we will be having 6-8 hour days means either 4 cams on rotation (which isn’t cheap) or a way of charging them on the move, which would take it from a helmet cam to a bike came.

My hunt for more JOGLE blogs continues, if you have one, or have found one on-line, please leave me a comment.
